Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the right to question certain decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
